Rose paced around like a wild animal. She’d checked every entry point of the building and secured them as best she could. The only way in, or out, without making a shitload of noise, was the side door. That’s if the Demons didn’t just blow them all to hell.

She was counting on the fact that Basilius wanted her, for what she had no idea, but he’d made his instructions to Razor very clear. So, hopefully, it would be a hands-on battle instead of a “blow the shit outta them” scenario. She could feel Isabel’s apprehension grow as the minutes ticked by and Rose continually tried to keep the woman focused elsewhere, doing the whole chatting thing to take her mind off the fact they were expecting a load of Demons to arrive any moment.

“How long’s it been?” Isabel asked as she peeked out a window.

“Almost half an hour,” Rose ground out, her own energy rising with every moment. “I’m sure Nikki will be back soon.”

“She better hurry.” Isabel’s voice quavered as she turned around. “I can see them in the distance.”

Rose rushed over, her enhanced eyesight seeing the figures that rushed toward them. “All right, we have a little time before they reach us.”

“I don’t think Nikki’s gonna make it,” Isabel whispered.

“She might.” Rose shrugged. “But, just in case, I’m going to do a hiding spell on you. What I want you to do is stay inside. Don’t let them see you and if Nikki appears while I’m outside, tell her to rest and then transport you away. All right?”

Isabel shook her head vehemently. “Absolutely not. Rose, if you’re out there fighting when Nikki gets here, the first thing I’m telling her is to get her ass out there to help you.”

“Isabel.” Rose looked out the window, checking to make sure the Demons hadn’t upped their speed. “It’s me they want. Basilius is the one who brought me to this godforsaken place and he tasked Razor with keeping me here. So, if there’s even a tiny chance that Nikki arrives and can get you out of this realm, then you fucking well take it! I can keep them busy long enough to do that, don’t let this be in vain. You have to escape.”

“I’m sorry.” Isabel’s eyes filled with tears. “But I don’t think I can do that. I can’t sacrifice one person for my own safety. I just can’t.”

Rose walked over, looking into the older woman’s eyes. “You’ve been very brave so far, but, in battle situations, sometimes the smart thing is to walk away. This is one of those times, Isabel. I’m asking you to walk away. Please do this. I don’t want your death on my conscience.”

Isabel’s face softened as she reluctantly nodded. “All right, the last thing I want is to distract you at the wrong moment, but, Rose, you do know what an extraordinary woman you are. Don’t you?”

“I’m just me.” Rose blushed at the compliment. “Now, enough of this melancholy, I want to go through some moves to loosen out my joints.
